Overview

What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a fully computer-based English proficiency test that uses AI to score every response instantly. Results are typically returned within 48 hours — making it the fastest turnaround option available for time-sensitive visa applications. It is widely accepted by Australian, UK, Canadian, and New Zealand immigration authorities, as well as thousands of universities worldwide.

Unlike IELTS, there is no human examiner. Every component is scored by Pearson's proprietary AI engine. This means scoring is highly consistent and rule-bound — once you understand the algorithm, you can engineer your responses to maximise marks in ways that are predictable and repeatable. Maven's trainers have reverse-engineered the PTE scoring rubrics to give students a decisive and systematic advantage.

Our PTE programme is intensive by design. In four weeks, we cover every question type, every integrated skill task, and every enabling-skill sub-score. Students leave not just prepared but confident — understanding exactly why the AI scores the way it does, and how to exploit that knowledge for maximum marks.

Critical Update

2026 Visa Score Requirements

PTE Academic minimum score thresholds for Australian and UK visas have been updated for 2026. Communicative skill sub-scores now matter as much as the overall score — confirm current requirements with the Department of Home Affairs before booking your test date.

  • Australia SC 500 (Student Visa): minimum PTE Academic overall 42 (previously 36) — communicative skills must also meet 36 per skill in most cases
  • Australia SC 485 (Graduate Visa): minimum PTE Academic overall 50 with no communicative skill below 36 — increased from the previous 42 overall threshold
  • Australia Skilled Migration (189/190/491): 'Proficient English' requires PTE Academic 65 per communicative skill for 10 points; 'Superior English' requires 79+ per skill for 20 points
  • Canada Study Permit (general stream): PTE Academic is accepted — minimum scores vary by institution; SDS fast-track equivalent is approximately 60 overall with no skill below 60
  • UK Student Route: PTE Academic accepted at UKVI-approved institutions — thresholds typically 51–65 overall depending on course level and institution tier
  • PTE Core (Canada PR): this is a distinct test from PTE Academic — designed specifically for Canadian immigration (Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs); verify which test your stream requires before enrolling
