Overview
Why Study in New Zealand?
New Zealand offers international students a uniquely balanced experience: globally recognised qualifications, an English-speaking environment, and a genuinely welcoming society — at a cost of living that is significantly more affordable than Australia or the UK. Its eight universities are all ranked in the top 3% globally, and its polytechnics and institutes of technology offer strong vocational and applied degree pathways.
With a Long-Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) that includes healthcare, engineering, ICT, and construction, New Zealand graduates in these fields often find employment before completing their post-study visa period — and many convert their experience into residence under the Skilled Migrant Category.
New Zealand's 2026 intake is shaped by new international enrolment integrity measures, mirroring similar reforms in Australia and Canada. Students are encouraged to apply early and work with a licensed immigration adviser to ensure a complete, well-prepared application.
Education System
New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF)
The New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) provides a comprehensive, 10-level framework covering all qualifications from school credentials through to doctoral degrees. All recognised qualifications are quality-assured by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and are internationally benchmarked.
New Zealand institutions operate on a two-semester system (February and July intakes). Degrees are taught in English, with dedicated English language support available at all major institutions for students who require it.
Certificate (Levels 1–6)
Foundational to specialist vocational qualifications, often a pathway to diploma study.
Diploma (Levels 5–6)
Applied and professional qualifications in business, hospitality, health, and technology.
Bachelor's Degree (Level 7, 3 years)
Undergraduate degrees across all disciplines at New Zealand's eight universities.
Postgraduate Certificate / Diploma (Level 8)
One-year postgraduate qualifications for career specialisation.
Master's Degree (Level 9, 1–2 years)
Coursework or research-based graduate study.
Doctoral Degree (Level 10)
PhD programmes, with funding opportunities through Marsden Fund and university scholarships.
