Overview
Why Study in Australia?
Australia is the third most popular destination for international students in the world, hosting over 700,000 international enrolments annually. Its eight world-class universities — the Group of Eight — consistently rank among the global top 100, producing graduates who are sought after by employers across every major industry.
Beyond academic excellence, Australia offers an unmatched quality of life: safe cosmopolitan cities, stunning natural landscapes, and a deeply multicultural society that makes international students feel immediately at home. Cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth each offer distinct cultures, affordable living options relative to European counterparts, and thriving student communities.
From a career perspective, Australia's 2026 intake environment is especially strong. High demand across nursing, engineering, information technology, and trade occupations means graduates in these fields often receive employer sponsorship well before their post-study visa expires — making Australia not just a study destination, but a genuine launchpad for permanent residency.
Education System
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
Australia's education system is governed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), a nationally consistent, comprehensive system of qualifications from schooling through to higher education. Every qualification delivered by a registered provider carries AQF recognition, meaning your degree is verifiable, quality-assured, and globally recognised.
Australian universities operate on a two-semester calendar (February and July intakes), with a small number of institutions offering a November intake for select programmes. Degrees are delivered in English, with strong academic support services for international students including writing centres, language support, and peer mentoring.
Certificate I–IV
Vocational skills for entry-level roles and trades. Typically 6–18 months.
Diploma / Advanced Diploma
Practical qualifications often used as a pathway into bachelor programmes.
Bachelor's Degree
3-year undergraduate degrees (4 years for honours). The primary international student pathway.
Graduate Certificate / Diploma
6–12 month postgraduate specialisations, ideal for career changers.
Master's Degree
1.5–2 year coursework or research degrees. Coursework is the most popular pathway.
Doctoral Degree (PhD)
3–4 year research degrees, often fully funded with a stipend for top applicants.
2026 Visa & Admission Updates
Critical 2026 Compliance Rules
Important — Read Before Applying
The 2026 intake introduces significant changes to Australia's student visa framework. All new applicants must satisfy the Genuine Student (GS) requirement — a new, more rigorous standard that replaces the former Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test.
Genuine Student (GS) assessment replaces the GTE — deeper scrutiny of study intentions and home-country ties
IELTS minimum raised to 6.0 per band (from 5.5) for most bachelor's programmes
Financial capacity threshold increased — certified bank statements showing AUD 29,710 for living costs plus full tuition must be held for a minimum of 3 months
OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) must be purchased through an approved provider before visa lodgement
Previous visa refusals in any country must be disclosed and may be subject to additional documentation
Processing times have extended to 4–10 weeks — early lodgement (3–4 months before intake) is strongly advised

Work Rights & Post-Study Pathways
Work While You Study & Beyond
During Studies
From 1 July 2023, the unlimited work hours cap for student visa holders was removed. Students may now work unrestricted hours during their studies (previously 40 hrs/fortnight). However, this was amended for 2025–2026: standard students are capped at 48 hours per fortnight during session; full-time work is permitted during scheduled course breaks.
After Graduation
The Temporary Graduate visa (Subclass 485) provides 2 to 4 years of full work rights after graduation, depending on your qualification and institution location. Regional and nursing graduates can access extended stay periods of up to 5–6 years.
PR & Visa Pathway Options
